World Theatre day message, University of Jaffna

It has given a space for fusion of traditional and modern theatre.

" to promote international exchange of knowledge and practice in the domain of the performing arts, to stimulate creation and increase cooperation between theatre people, to make public opinion aware of the necessity of taking artistic creation into consideration in the domain of development, to deepen mutual understanding in order to participate in strengthening peace and friendship among peoples, to join in the defence of the ideals and aims of UNESCO." 

 

As being reflected of the aims and ideals of UNESCO the world theatre day has been celebrated on 27 th of March 2008 at Kailasapathy auditorium, University of Jaffna . It was organized by the Department of Fine Arts and the 'Empty space Theatre group' University of Jaffna . The celebration was inaugurated by Prof. N.Shanmugalingan, Vice Chancellor Univerasity of Jafffna and Prof.S.Sivalingarajh (Acting Dean, Faculty of Arts) and Dr.A.N.Krishnaveni (Head, Department of Fine Arts) are also invited as guest of honors.

 

Kadduvan Veerapathra Vasanthan- Directed by Mr.Murugesh Sivaprakasam

Traditional religious pole dance, related to the cult of God Veerapathra. The performers dance with pair of poles and make variety of foot works. It had been practiced in the Village of Kadduan (Northern part of Sri Lanka ). Even though due the prevailing situation the Village was abounded nearly twenty years back but the 'Vasanthan' is still alive.

 
 

'Kanavinnillal' (Shadow of the Dream or mask of the face) - Directed by Mr.K.Rathitharan

It's a pantomime show, speaks about the relation of inner life of men.

 

'Moodi' (Lid)- Directed by Ms. K.Navadharshani

One man theatre mime show, Speaks about the existence of imprisoned life of a man.

 
 

'Kathavarajan' - Directed by Mr.J.Jeyathees

It's a kind of religious traditional theatre form particularly practice in the Northern part of Sri Lanka . Now it has been practice in the secular space as well.

 
 

"2004:9.0" - Directed by Mr.K.Rathitharan

Pantomime, it's describe the disaster of Tsunami victims, it is specially produced for the audience who are not experienced in this tragedy.

 
 

'Thadumartram' Confusion -Directed by Ms.Jane Lahusa 

Dialogue oriented comedy. It's express the impact of the liquor (toddy) in human being in war effected areas.

 
 

'Saadchi' (Witness) - Directed by Mr.S.T.Arutkumaran

Dialogue oriented comedy. A tragic of a genuine man who is cheated by a cunning man.
