Coat of Arms

The Coat of Arms or Crest of the University of Jaffna has the symbol of “நந்தி” (‘nanthi‘ – bull)  and the traditional oil lamp at the centre. Nanthi adorned the flag of the Jaffna Kingdom that existed in the northern Sri Lanka until it was dismantled by the Portuguese  in the fifteenth century. The traditional oil lamp symbolises the light of wisdom. The centre emblem is surrounded by  sixty four flames depicting the sixty four varieties of arts that adorn the Tamil culture. The crest thus smbolises the growth of wisdom along with its culture carrying the motto “மெய்ப்பொருள் காண்பது அறிவு” (‘meypporuL kaaNpathu aRivu’ – Discernment is wisdom).
