Student Welfare Branch

The StuStudent Welfare Services Branch functions under an Assistant Registrar. It looks after the welfare of the students. Its functions are multifarious and includes Hostels and Accommodation, Canteens, Sports and Recreation, Student Relations, Student Counseling, Student Societies and Assemblies, students' health, financial assistance such as Mahapola and Bursaries, the Vice-Chancellor's Welfare Fund etc.

This Branch is also responsible for conducting disciplinary inquiries involving students.

Student Counselling

 

The aim of the student counselling is to provide assistance and guidance to the students outside their academic activity. Students have the

         opportunity of seeking assistance and guidance from the Student Counsellors. This includes:

  1. Orientation to the new environment,
  2. Advice regarding accommodation, students Bursaries etc,
  3. Assisting them with personal problems,
  4. Advice regarding any other related matters.
 

University teachers who have experience and good relationship with the students are appointed as Student Counsellors. It is their duty to listen with sympathy and understanding to the problems of students, such as their personal problems and complaints of any harassment, and assist and guide the students to solve such problems to the best of their ability. All complaints and consultations are kept strictly confidential.

·   Senior Student Counsellor:    Dr.P.Pushparatnam,  Senior Lecturer in History,  Department of History

The Senior Student Counsellor co-ordinates all counselling services. The Senior Student Counsellor is responsible for inquiring into complaints made by students, granting permission for conducting student meetings, seminars, cultural shows etc.

·   Temporary Student Counsellors:

Temporary Student Counsellors are appointed during the period of new admission to the University.

·   The MarshalMr.I.G.Santhirasegaram

The Marshal assist the Student Counsellors to conduct their duties and issue Students Identity Cards and Record Books. There is also a desk dealing with inquiries in respect of lost property at the Senior Student Counsellor's Office. This office make special arrangements for getting bus season tickets at concessionary rates. Students are requested to contact the  Marshal to get season tickets in time.

 

Students Societies

 

In terms of the sections 115 & 116 of the Universities Act. No. 16 of 1978, the recognition of Unions, Societies and other Associations of Students in the University of Jaffna shall be made with the concurrence of the University Grants Commission,

As at  01-01-2004 the University Grants Commission has approved the following students societies:

No Students Union, Society or Association of students shall be allowed to function within the University of Jaffna unless it is approved by the University Grants Commission.

Sports facilities

 

   Sports and related activities in the University are organized by the Physical Education Unit through the
       S
ports Council.

        In the University every undergraduate in entitled to the facilities provided by the University and are
        encouraged to
make the best use of such facilities.

   The Physical Education Unit provides the following sports facilities for men and women.

 

·  Men

Football. Basketball, Hockey, Cricket, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Badminton and athletics.

·  Women

Basketball, Netball, Hockey, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Badminton and athletics.

The attention of all students is drawn to the following:

  1. Inter Faculty Sports Competitions are organised in Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Hockey and athletics.
  2. Open championships are held in Table Tennis and Badminton.
  3. University teams participate in the Inter University Tournaments and Meets organised by the various Sports Associations.
  4. Colours of the University of Jaffna are awarded in all kinds of Sports for which facilities are provided.
  5. Students are provided with various sports Training Programmes.

Further information may be obtained from the Physical Education Unit and/or from the Sports Council.

University Health Centre

The University Health Centre assists the students and staff to lead an active life free of mental and physical ailments.

The University Health Centre is situated in the north western corner of the Thirunelvely premises of the University behind the science buildings. On week days the centre is open from 9.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. The lunch hour is from 12.30 p.m. to 1.30 p.m. It is closed during week-ends. The centre is at present staffed by two Medical Officers, two staff nurses, two attendants, and two labourers. Treatment is for out patients only. Patients requiring specialist treatment and those who need to be warded will be directed by the Medical Officers to the University Clinics at the General Teaching Hospital, Jaffna.

The Health Centre is also responsible for the following:

 

a)      Medical care of the University community.

b)      Medical examination of new enrolments.

c)      Prevention of communicable diseases among University community.

d)      Medical counselling.

e)      Maintenance of environmental health within the University premises.

 

Laboratory testing facilities for all university students and staff are available in the Medical Faculty. Steps are being taken to have a laboratory within the Health Centre to perform simple tests.

Any student who is unable to attend classes due to illness should inform the University Medical Officer of such illness, within one week of falling ill.

 

Hostels and Canteens

 

·    Hostels

The following hostels are maintained by University:
  1. Ananda coomaraswamy Hall -    Wardan:  Mrs.S.Yogendrarajah        Sub-Wardan:  Miss.M.Lalithamini
    (Female Hostel), Thirunelvely.
  2. Balasingam Hall -                      Wardan:  Prof.A.Shanmugathas       Sub-Wardan:  Mr.M.Premachandran
    (Male Hostel), Thirunelvely.
  3. Girls Hostel -           
    (Under Construction) 
  4. RAFA Hostel                            Wardan:  Mrs.(Dr).A.N.Krishnaverni   Sub-Wardan:  Mrs.G.Jeyaranjini

The wardens, who are senior members of the academic staff, are in charge of these hostels. A residential sub-warden live in each hostel and students are advised to meet the sub-warden in case of any problem.

Students against whom disciplinary action has been taken shall forfeit all rights to hostel accommodation.

The number of persons who can be accommodated in the hostels is limited and priority is given to the following category.

  1. those who suffer from physical deformity;
  2. First year outstation students;
  3. Special degree final year students;
  4. Final year students (General Degree).

·                   Canteens

There are several canteens run by different caterers but supervised by Student Welfare Committees. The main canteen is at the student centre in the Thirunelvely campus. This caters most of the students of the Arts, Management Studies and Commerce and Science faculties. In this canteen general food items including breakfast and lunch are served. Separate canteens exist at the following places:

(a)  Medical Faculty Premises

(b)  Department of Siddha Medicine at Kaithady

(c)  Ramanathan Academy of Fine Arts, at Chunakam

(d)  Balasingam Hall

(e)  Ananda coomaraswamy Hall
