Journey of Sports Science Unit

Sports Science Unit- Poinners in Physical Education in Sri Lanka.

The University of Jaffna was initially established in 1974 as the Jaffna campus of the University of Sri Lanka. Upon receiving a large number of requests from various sectors to commence a Physical Education Programme, the Physical Education Unit (Academic), University of Jaffna was founded in October 1998. Since then a self-financing two-year Diploma Programme in Physical Education at the University of Jaffna has been offered and fifty students are admitted annually. In 2003, to cater to the emerging needs of the Sports and Leisure world, the Physical Education Unit (Academic) was renamed as Sports Science Unit. In 2021, The UGC approved the degree programme under the faculty of Allied Health Sciences.

Now, the Sports Science Unit produced 11 batches of nearly 400 diploma-holders and has been mainly employed in the Sports Ministry and Ministry Education sector. Sports performance of the north province continuously increased after the year 2000, due to the employment of the Physical Education Diploma holders in Sports and Education ministry. In 2023 Sports Science Unit stepped in its 25th year of service. Therefore, the University of Jaffna and the alumni of the Sports Science Unit jointly organized a variety of sports and games tournaments (basketball, cricket, football, badminton) Blood Donation camp, and Health awareness walk. Nearly 1500 participants have participated in a variety of tournaments. Also 70 blood donors donated blood and 500 participants involved in health awareness walk.
